The job

We are seeking an experienced, proactive individual to lead our Application Engineering team in articulating the benefits of MathWorks, COMSOL, and Speedgoat products and services.

In this role, you and your team will collaborate with engineers and scientists from the most advanced R&D organizations across the region.

As the Application Engineering Team Lead, you will manage a team of application engineers who build strong relationships to understand the challenges faced by our partners in their research and development efforts. You will work closely with the Sales and Marketing teams to demonstrate the benefits of incorporating our products into the customer’s design, development, and deployment processes.

The daily routine:

Your Responsibilities as a Team Leader

  • Manage a team of customer-facing engineers while staying hands-on as a part-time individual contributor.

  • Provide guidance, mentorship, and direction for team members.

  • Oversee, coordinate, and manage customer-facing technical activities.

  • Lead by example in the excellence of customer-facing activities, including technical presentations and interactions.

  • Drive and oversee the performance management process, from weekly 1:1s to annual goal-setting and reviews, enabling individual growth of team members.

  • Perform administrative tasks related to the team, monitor and balance workloads, and report on team performance.

  • Develop and maintain technical and business processes in Application Engineering.

  • Collaborate with Sales, Marketing, and Engineering teams, work closely with your AE Team Lead peer, and report to the Head of Engineering.

Your Responsibilities in Your Individual Contributor Role as an Application Engineer

  • Engage with our partners to understand their project goals and recommend effective technical solutions.

  • Develop and present proofs-of-concept in MATLAB and Simulink to prospective partners, demonstrating how the software meets their project requirements.

  • Deliver technical presentations and demonstrations that highlight the capabilities and value of our products and services.

  • Manage product evaluations and guide partners toward adopting our solutions.

  • Partner with Marketing to create compelling examples of MATLAB and Simulink in action for awareness-building events.

  • Build long-term relationships with strategic users of MATLAB and Simulink to ensure their continued success.

  • Collaborate with Sales to serve as a trusted advisor to key customers, helping to address their critical technology and business challenges while supporting business opportunities.

  • Work closely with Customer-Facing Engineers to provide additional services to our partners, including tailored solutions in consulting, classroom lectures, training, and expert assistance in technical support.

  • Never stop learning. Keep up with industry trends and product developments, and deepen and expand your knowledge in various application areas.

The essentials:

  • A bachelor’s degree and 7 years of professional work experience, a master’s degree and 5 years of professional work experience, or a PhD and 2 years of professional experience (or equivalent experience) is required.

  • Proven work experience using MATLAB, Simulink, or COMSOL.

  • Candidates must be eligible and willing to work from our office in Budapest, Hungary.

  • Excellent command of English, both written and spoken.

  • Excellent presentation and communication skills.

  • Strong communicator with a high level of emotional intelligence.

  • Team player with a collaborative attitude.

The nice-to-haves:

  • A master’s degree and 10 years of professional work experience, or a PhD and 7 years of professional experience (or equivalent experience).

  • Prior line management or leadership experience is a definite plus.

  • Project management experience is a definite plus.

  • Significant R&D experience, especially in designing and developing MATLAB- or Simulink-based solutions across the complete life cycle.

  • Customer-facing engineering experience.

  • Experience developing and delivering technical presentations.

  • Hungarian language skills are a plus.
